Philosophy

Our investment philosophy is based on partnerships with management and long-term commitment.

Partnerships with management

Chartwell's investment philosophy is centered on establishing a partnership with management. We believe that the ability to work with management is fundamental to long-term success. Prior to making any investment, we seek to develop a thorough understanding of a company's finances, operating characteristics, underlying values and potential performance.

Providing significant equity for management through stock options and co-investment opportunities ensures that we share common goals. Equity partnership is the key to maximizing our investment return over the long term.

Conservatively structured transactions

Chartwell structures an acquisition by tailoring it to a company's financial requirements, the business environment, the seller's needs, and the current trends in the financial markets. Our professionals have raised more than $5 billion of debt and equity financing for a variety of transactions.

Whenever possible, we strive to use modest leverage (less than 50% debt financing) when acquiring companies in order to mitigate risk and allow management to focus on the business, not the balance sheet.

We consistently provide additional equity for our portfolio companies to make strategic acquisitions and to invest in projects which accelerate earnings growth.

Our investment approach often helps companies attract additional capital from other sources. Chartwell's strong reputation with banks, institutional investors, insurance companies and other financing sources can dramatically strengthen a company's financial credibility and improve access to both the debt and equity capital markets.

“The Chartwell philosophy is reminiscent of JP Morgan — to do first-class business in a first-class way."
