Carey International is the world’s leading provider of premium chauffeured vehicle services through a worldwide network of owned and operated companies, licensees and affiliates serving 546 cities in 60 countries. As the premium brand in the industry, Carey is recognized worldwide and is synonymous with high-quality chauffeured vehicle services. Carey and its network of service providers generate revenue in excess of $600 million. In connection with the going-private transaction closed in September 2000, Chartwell and Carey management arranged for a strategic partnership with an investment from Ford Motor Company. In October 2007, Avis Budget Group made an investment in Carey for a significant minority position. Proceeds from the investment were used to reduce leverage and facilitated a refinancing of the balance sheet to lower borrowing costs. As a result of these transactions, Carey has gained another synergistic operating partner, a more attractive capital structure and significant organic and strategic growth opportunities.
Carey was founded in 1921 when J.P. Carey acquired the Packard Touring Car Company with six Packard touring cars at Grand Central Station in New York City. Over the next 50 years, the company became a prominent provider of transportation services within the New York metropolitan area. In the early 1970s, Carey began to expand its network of affiliates and licensees and in 1986 began consolidating this network to bring control of operations in most major U.S. and European cities under the Carey brand name. To date, Carey has acquired over 47 companies representing over $160 million in annualized revenues while, at the same time, significantly expanding the scale and reach of its operations.
With no direct competitors offering comparable global service coverage or pursuing a significant acquisition program, Chartwell and Carey management believe Carey is well positioned to continue revenue and profit growth.
