Richard Childress Racing

Richard Childress Racing (RCR) owns and operates three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams and two Nationwide Series teams. The Company has a winning tradition in NASCAR racing as the first team to win a championship in each of the Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Craftsman Truck series. In addition, the legendary Dale Earnhardt captured six Sprint Cup championships for RCR from 1986 through 1994.

The Company’s primary sponsors include, in the Sprint Cup series, Cheerios/Hamburger Helper (No. 33 Chevrolet), Shell/Pennzoil (No. 29 Chevrolet) and Caterpillar (No. 31 Chevrolet) and, in the Nationwide series, Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma (No. 2 Chevrolet) and Holiday Inn/Holiday Inn Express (No. 29 Chevrolet).

RCR generates revenue from direct racing activity including the sale of long-term team sponsorships, race winnings, and television fees. In 2007, RCR's engine department joined forces with the engine department of Dale Earnhardt, Inc., to create Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines (ECR) which provides engine production and research development for both companies as well as a growing customer base.  RCR also earns significant royalties on the sale of merchandise to fans, as well as revenue from showing its cars at special events and providing high-performance engineering services to third parties.

NASCAR has grown consistently over the past two decades as fast-paced, high-drama racing has attracted a more geographically and demographically diverse fan base. Today, 17 of the top 20 highest attended sporting events in the U.S. are NASCAR events and the sport consistently generates television viewership second only to football. NASCAR boasts over 75 million fans with unparalleled loyalty to companies that sponsor NASCAR. According to NASCAR research, fans are 94% more likely to have positive feelings about NASCAR sponsors and their products and 89% of fans agree that a company “delivers quality” when a NASCAR logo is associated with that company.

Richard Childress began his racing career in 1965, and drove his own NASCAR Grand National (now NASCAR Sprint Cup) car from 1969 to 1981. Upon his retirement as a driver, Richard Childress selected Dale Earnhardt to drive his No. 3 race cars. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, Earnhardt achieved legendary status, capturing the Sprint Cup Series championship for RCR in 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994.

Today, RCR is widely recognized as one of the few elite NASCAR race teams, with 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities in Welcome, North Carolina, cutting edge engineering and technology, top drivers and an unmatched winning tradition.
