Our seasoned professionals have decades of collective experience as private equity investors and have extensive backgrounds in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and corporate development. We have the broad experience necessary to complete complicated transactions successfully. In the past, Chartwell has devised strategies aimed at solving family succession issues, intricate tax and public securities problems, as well as structuring and governance questions related to partnerships with several Fortune 500 U.S. public companies.


As a result of the firm’s organizational structure, Chartwell is positioned to react rapidly to a company’s financing needs and to work closely with shareholders and management in arranging a successful transaction. We pride ourselves on honoring every commitment and closing every transaction we sign.

Partners

William R. Reid joined Chartwell as a Partner in 2001.

Prior to Chartwell, he spent seven years at Morgan Stanley, Inc. as a Managing Director and Co-Head of the Global Financial Sponsor Group where he oversaw the firm’s corporate finance coverage of private equity firms worldwide. Mr. Reid formerly spent 13 years at Credit Suisse First Boston, most recently as Head of High Yield Finance. His experience includes a wide range of corporate finance activities including leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, high yield offerings, initial public offerings and merger advisories.

Mr. Reid currently serves as a Director of PPC Industries; Richard Childress Racing; and is a member of the Yale Development Board and the Board of Trustees of Barnard College. He graduated cum laude from Yale University with a B.A. in History and from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Michael S. Shein is a founder and Partner of Chartwell Investments.

Mr. Shein has participated in the purchase and sale of businesses with total transaction values in excess of $4 billion. He has experience in all facets of management buyouts and venture capital transactions including valuation, structuring debt and equity financing, portfolio oversight and restructuring. Prior to joining Chartwell in 1992, Mr. Shein was a Senior Vice President of a private New York City based investment firm, and worked at Goldman, Sachs & Company in the Mergers & Acquisitions Department.

Mr. Shein currently serves as a director of Carey International, Inc.; Idaho Timber Corporation; PPC Industries; and Richard Childress Racing. Mr. Shein received a B.S. summa cum laude from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Michael J. Rolland joined Chartwell as a Special Partner in 2004.

He retired as a Managing Director of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. in 2000 and since then has been active as an independent adviser. He founded and managed Merrill Lynch’s Exclusive Sales and Divestitures Group which, under his leadership, became a major factor in the middle market mergers and acquisition business in the U.S. and Canada. His clients in more than 250 transactions have included major corporations, family businesses, entrepreneurs, and many leading private equity groups. Mr. Rolland joined Merrill Lynch following its acquisition of Warburg Paribas Becker in 1984, where he had specialized in international mergers and acquisitions since 1977. He began his career as an Investment Manager with Ivory & Sime in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Mr. Rolland received his MA from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland and his MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

C. Larry Davis joined Chartwell as Special Partner in 2004.

Mr. Davis is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Davis Holdings, a consulting and investment company. He has a broad food and beverage industry background with over 36 years experience at Davis Holdings, Nestle S.A. and PepsiCo Inc. At Nestle Specialty Products Company, Mr. Davis served as Group Vice President and President of the $800 million company where he was primarily involved in the successful turnaround of the under-performing businesses, the creation of new business growth divisions, and acquisitions and divestitures. In 1991, Mr. Davis founded Farmhousefoods Company, a manufacturer and marketer of branded rice, noodles, and bean side dishes and add-the-meat dinner mixes. Farmhouse Foods Company was subsequently sold to General Mills, Inc. in 1999.

Mr. Davis is a member of several Boards of Directors including Pep Snack Foods, Inc.; E.J. Brooks Company; and Biocide, Inc. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and Indiana University School of Business. davis@chartwellinvestments.com

 

Principals

Sarah G. Foley joined Chartwell as a Principal from Lansdowne Capital, an investment and advisory firm, where she executed venture capital investments.

Prior to Lansdowne, Ms. Foley worked at Greenhill & Co., a global Mergers & Acquisitions advisory firm. While at Greenhill & Co., she executed mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings and private equity investments across a variety of industries. Prior to Greenhill & Co., she worked in the Merger, Acquisition & Restructuring Department at Morgan Stanley, Inc. in New York.

Ms. Foley currently serves on the Board of Directors of Carey International, Inc. and PPC Industries. She graduated with honors from Northwestern University with a B.A. in Economics and Mathematical Methods in Social Sciences.

Justine M. Gordon joined Chartwell as an Associate from Morgan Stanley, Inc., where she worked in the Global Media and Communications Investment Banking division.

While at Morgan Stanley, Ms. Gordon executed strategic and financing opportunities in the media and broadband cable sectors. Prior to that, she was an Analyst in the company’s Investment Banking Division where she focused on mergers, acquisitions and restructuring transactions. She began her career in the Audit Division of PriceWaterhouse Coopers.

Ms. Gordon earned a Masters of Philosophy in Finance and was a British Chevening scholar at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Prior to that, she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance and an Honors Degree in Accounting. Ms. Gordon is a qualified chartered accountant.

Associates

John B. McConnell joined Chartwell as an Associate in 2007.

Previously, Mr. McConnell was an analyst in JPMorgan's Syndicated & Leveraged Finance Group in New York, where he worked for 3 years with financial sponsors and corporate clients to raise debt capital for leveraged buyouts and corporate financings.

Mr. McConnell received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Georgetown University.

Mark Woods joined Chartwell in 2008.

Previously, Mr. Woods was an Associate in JPMorgan's Mergers and Acquisitions Group in New York, where he executed various transactions in the media, specialty finance, healthcare and industrials sectors. Prior to that, he worked for a sovereign wealth fund based in the United Arab Emirates. He started his career with Procter & Gamble where he spent five years in various operational finance positions.

Mr. Woods received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and graduated magna cum laude from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a B.S. in Finance and Management.
